Our Story

The seed for Roots Garden Center was planted when owner, Scott Peterson, decided to retire from the railroad. Scott’s wife, Karen, asked “What’ll be our next adventure?” Over the course of their many joyful years together it was not the first time either of them had decided to reinvent themselves. Building on his love of nature and art, he bought a truck and hired helpers to start a landscaping company. Scott’s artistic approach to landscaping and consistent quality earned him a fine reputation and steady business.

Scott soon decided that he needed someplace to store equipment and plant materials, setting his eyes upon a plot of land he knew from a previous career. As he and his crew constructed greenhouses, the neighbors took notice. Every day folks stopped by to peer curiously at the project and ask: “Are you selling plants? When are you opening?” It became apparent to Scott that the community needed a local source of quality plants and decided that he was the one to provide. Roots Garden Center opened their doors to the public on April 1, 2017.

What started out as a man’s retirement project has snowballed into a thriving business that provides quality plants and landscaping services.

Roots Garden Center is more than just a shop to purchase plants, it is a place of learning and enjoyment of the benefits of nurturing living things. Growing this business has been a long road paved with hardship and setbacks, but we greet each challenge with a “Well it could have been worse!”
